Summary The Associate Chief of Staff for Geriatrics and Extended Care and Rehab Service (GEC&R) is a key leader that works under the broad supervision of the Chief of Staff. The Associate Chief of Staff for Geriatrics and Extended Care and Rehab Service (GEC&R) is responsible and accountable for the overall leadership, policy planning, budget, operations and performance of the service line at all sites to achieve quality healthcare and outcomes. Responsibilities Supervisory Controls: The Associate Chief of Staff for Geriatrics and Extended Care and Rehab Service (GEC&R) directs and manages all administrative activities within the service line including budget and fiscal management. The incumbent is responsible for the successful performance of his/her assigned areas, specifically regarding customer satisfaction, quality of patient care services provided, accreditation compliance, and the efficient delivery of services. The Associate Chief of Staff for Geriatrics and Extended Care and Rehab Service (GEC&R) must take the required learning courses and meet performance measures and monitors specific to Geriatric Primary Care. The Geriatric Primary Care physician is expected to be familiar with and comply with all national standards utilized at this medical treatment facility, including JCAHO and NCQA standards, complete required CBTs, CME, and mandated VA training. Performs under the general supervision of the Chief of Staff. The incumbent works with a high degree of independence and exercises a wide degree of latitude in decision making and judgment in completing assignments. Incumbent's supervisor sets priorities but allows the employee to organize recurring activities. Completed assignments are evaluated for technical soundness, usefulness, and conformance with VA requirements. Organizational Effectiveness: Performs clinical duties on a regular basis within delineated approved privileges. Participates actively in delivering in-service training for medical center disciplines and services; in teaching of medical school residents and medical students; and, in supporting an environment that promotes academic excellence and encourages continual learning. Participates in interdisciplinary team activities provides cross coverage to other programs as needed to achieve optimum interdepartmental cooperation to assure that patient care is continuously improved. Directs the continuous measurement and improvement of the quality of care provided by the service. Plans, coordinates, and ensures high quality through utilization of multiple quality measurement tools. Responsible for financial and human resource management. Develops the annual strategic and budget plan consistent with guidance and goals from the Director's Office and/or Financial Management Service. Develops and implements tracking methods to monitor the service's responsibilities. Collaborates with other service chiefs in the development and execution of the overall Medical Center strategic and business plan. Plans initiatives and develops programs in collaboration with other services to ensure coordination of service, reduction of redundancies, and enhancement of cost effectiveness. Promotes clinical and operational efficiencies to enhance programs and services, e.g. reduction in length of stay and reduction in appointment wait times. Participates in the Senior Medical Officer of the Day on-call rotation. Performs other duties as required. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Physical requirements outlined below. Preferred Experience: Prefer the physician be board certified in internal medicine and possess experience with academic medical practice in a teaching hospital. Prefer candidates who have 5 years of experience as a section/department chief. Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office. Education Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are: Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted, or Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted. For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, facility officials must verify with the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) that the applicant has met requirements for certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant. [If the applicant does not claim an ECFMG certificate, facility officials must still confirm that the medical school meets (or met) ECFMG eligibility requirements for the year the candidate graduated.] Additional Information This is an open continuous announcement; applicants will be reviewed and referred on a bi-weekly basis; the announcement will remain open until the positions are filled.
